The acerola is the fruit of a shrub or small tree (up to 5 meters), native to the West Indies, Central America and northern South America. The fruits are globose drupes of 1 to 2 inches in diameter, bright red look a bit like cherries. The edible part of the fruit contains about 14% of vitamin C (ascorbic acid and diidroascorbico, the first in greater quantities).
